  • 1. Evaluation and treatment of coexisting medical conditions will help stabilize the patient and improve rehabilitation. Medical conditions should be stabilized and psychiatric illness such as depression, anxiety, and psychosis should be treated in order to optimize long term treatment outcomes.

  • 2. Smooth transition into long term pharmacologic and psychosocial treatment will improve outcomes. Patients should be started in long term treatment prior to discharge fro inpatient units, and outpatients should have long term treatment integrated into the withdrawal treatment program.
