The widespread use of alcohol derives from its pharmacologic affects that make the drinker more relaxed and less anxious. Although when drinking alone this may just make the individual more sleepy, in a stimulating social setting, where alcohol is usually consumed, alcohol produces reduced social inhibition, leading the individual to be more gregarious, talkative, friendly and outspoken. Often the person consuming the alcohol is less self-aware leading to decreased self-perception and judgment. There is usually an increase of self-confidence. This may lead to increased risk-taking, which is observed in many social situations. There is a strong interaction of alcohol effects and the expectations of the individual in different environments. Alcohol impairment of memory varies with the task difficulty and in some situations performance may actually be improved by alcohol, which can reduce the effects of stress on performance. Higher alcohol doses obviously produce clear memory impairment and very high doses can lead to “black outs”.
