    • Food Pyramid replaced by My Plate – delineating foods and portion control
    • The Department of Agriculture proposed new rules on February 2, 2013 to make sure all foods sold in schools are more healthful. This change would ban the sale of almost all candy, high-calorie sports drinks, sugar-sweetened sodas and greasy foods.
    • While many schools have already made improvements in their lunch menus and vending machine choices, others are still selling high-fat, high calorie foods.
    • Under the proposal, the Agriculture Department would set fat, calorie, sugar and sodium limits on almost all foods sold in schools and ALL US public schools would be covered.
    • Schools, the food industry, interest groups, supporters and opponents have 60 days to input their feedback and/or suggest changes. A plan could be in place by 2014.
