Describe the role of corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) in alcohol dependence.

(5 of 8)

  • Stress increases relapse into alcohol drinking in abstinent previously alcohol dependent individuals. Up regulation of CRF-1 receptors in the amygdala is seen following alcohol dependence.

    1. CRF antagonists selectively block stress-induced reinstatement of alcohol seeking in post alcohol dependent rats.
    2. CRF antagonists do not block alcohol-cue induced relapse, but this is blocked by natrexone.
    3. Genetic variations in the CRF promoter and CRF receptor relate to increased stress induced alcohol intake
    4. Neuropeptide Y decreases alcohol self-administration in post dependent animals presumably by counteracting the effects of CRF in the amygdala.
