Summary of Diagnosing Food Addiction

(5 of 5)

  • Summary

    • Given the potential magnitude of food addictions on the population, it is imperative that an accurate means of detecting such addictive behavior be identified.
    • A number of tests have been proposed.
    • Currently one of the most promising screening questionnaires is the Yale Food Addictions Scale (YFAS).
    • This test uses simple yes or no and 5-point Likert scale questions which can be easily understood by patients.
    • Further testing has shown good validity and reliability in practice, and so is thought to be a good predictor of disordered overeating and may be a useful tool to help clinicians identify disordered habits.
    • Future focus is likely to facilitate screening for specific food ingredients such as high fat or sugar.
