What are the risk factors for giving birth to a child with FAS?

    Women giving birth to  children with FAS have a high rate of mental health disorder (96%) and a high rate of a history of sexual or physical abuse (95%).  81% had no birth control and 77% had an unplanned pregnancy. 60% had less than a high school education and 60% lived in a  household with  income of less than $10,000 per year.
     
    Thus , mental health problems, history of abuse,  less education and  lower social economic status, are important risk factors for mothers having children with FAS.
